History
The fellowship began in 1892 when a number of brethren from Philip Street Gospel Mission were baptised and formed themselves into Mount Calvary English Baptist Church. The word English was included to show that services would be conducted in the English language. The first building, an Iron Chapel, was constructed in Upper Major St, Manselton in 1894. The surrounding area, the Manselton Estate, was, at the time, being newly developed as a "housing estate". The Mansel family would not permit the construction or operation of public houses on their property but permitted shops and churches. |
Our founding elders decided to construct a largish chapel of normal design for Wales, a main church with a gallery and a large schoolroom. The resulting, imposing, Art Nouveau/late Gothic style building was completed in 1910. Unfortunately, as with most chapels of the period, the rather grand design, high ceilings, ornate towers etc. have led to problems in recent years. The building is actually Grade II listed but was subject to major re-building work in 2011/12. Since 1910 the church has always met in the building and continues to do so today. |
