Activities
Apart from Sunday worship and our midweek prayer and bible study meeting, we have a number of other weekly activities. We operate a Sunday school on Sunday morning with children leaving the main service at the appropriate point. Our weekly format includes a bible story and message, incorporating practical and relatable ways for modern life, they are given challenges for the week in attempt to include and practice these in their lives. The sessions always have the underlining theme of God’s love and Christ’s sacrifice for them, highlighting how he wants them to become friends with him. Various activities follow, such as crafts, puzzles, colouring and cooking. During the year, key celebrations and stories have included Mother’s and Father’s day, Easter, Harvest and Christmas. The children received donated Easter eggs and Christmas presents and chocolates. The group enjoyed decorating the Christmas tree in the school room and designing their own Nativity scene on one of the display boards. Tuesday afternoon we have our Toddler Group. Over the past year we have been pleased to see our children numbers increase, parents, grandparents and carers attending. Several new families have joined who have been introduced by parents who already come, in addition to families returning with new babies and those whose children have moved to morning nursery so are free in the afternoon. Many of the families who attend have been able to link in with support from the clothes and food banks, as well as those who are referred from outside venues. We continue not to charge for the sessions, being grateful for financial support from donations and fund raising. We reinforce to parents that the group is not run to make a profit and we are more blessed to see them attend. The Ladies Guild was formed in 1962 and was a weekly meeting on a Thursday evening, primarily as a social gathering for the young wives of Mount Calvary. They would have speakers or demonstrations by local firms which were of interest at that time. From time-to-time outings were also arranged. Of recent years meetings have moved to Thursday afternoons. Although all ages are catered for most members are now retired but we still have a programme of speakers (both Christian and secular) and offer friendship and fellowship to all ladies. Our weekly meetings are normally held from February to June and from September to November and each session is usually closed with either a summer or a Christmas lunch. The Guild is also able to financially support local and national charities. We aim to run some kind of special event every 2 months or so to which friends and neighbours can be invited. These include; St David's Day celebration, Christmas Fair, Quiz Night, Strawberry Tea, garden parties and walks. They have all been well supported. |
There is an on-going collection of food year-round for the local foodbank and we also have a clothes bank in support of local families. We have a flower ministry with flowers being distributed to members of the congregation who are ill or celebrating a special event. For a number of years we have held a church holiday although declining numbers mean that we now make a block booking on a local coach company’s pre-arranged holiday. Our leadership team and a number of our congregation have received CRB training to work with children and a number have also gained a Food Hygiene Certificate. |
